Australia’s famous 2,000 km long Great Barrier Reef, the largest coral reef in the world, comprises almost one fifth of the world's reef area.
With more than 2,800 reefs, the 347,000 square kilometre system is home to a huge variety of marine life species in a wide range of tropical habitats. There are a variety of liveaboard and daytrips options for divers of all levels and budgets visiting the Great Barrier Reef throughout Queensland and neighbouring states. More temperate sites are found in the southern states and Tasmania, while tropical and temperate marine life reside together in Byron Bay in New South Wales in the Solitary Islands off northern New South Wales, and the Abrolhos Islands on the west coast off Geraldton in Western Australia. |
