Italy is home to a number of top-quality equipment manufacturers such as Mares and Cressi-Sub. It also has a long history of diving, dating back to well before Leonardo da Vinci designed the world’s first diving suit (essentially a barrel with a surface supplied air source). It should come as no surprise that many world-records in free diving have been set by Italians.
This interest in sub-aquatic activities is no doubt inspired by Italy’s proximity to some of the world’s most interesting dive sites. Surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, Italy has a wealth of historic and recreational dive sites, and a long history of commercial, naval and private explorations of the underwater world. |
