February 18 2009 Cayman IslandsNew International scuba Diving Hall Of Fame Inductees The International Scuba Diving Hall of Fame (ISDHF) has recognized four international pioneers and two Cayman Island honorees for their contributions to the recreational scuba diving industry. In a ceremony held on Grand Cayman Island on January 29, 2009, awards for the Inductees and local Ministry of Tourism Honorees were presented by the Hon. Charles E. Clifford, JP, Minister for Tourism, Environment, Investment & Commerce in Cayman.  The Honorable Minister praised the newest Inductees as dedicated and professional individuals who have taken their love for diving and applied it through various disciplines to promote awareness of the aquatic environment, maintain the admirable safety record of diving, and establish a foundation for the worldwide development of the sport.  The evening’s Master of Ceremonies was Leslie Leaney, President of the Historical Diving Society in the US. August 25 2008 HawaiiArchaeologists have located British whaler sunk by bad weather in 1837 off Kure Atoll Artefacts from the remains of a wreck believed to be of the British whaling vessel Gledstanes lost for 171 years have been found off Kure Atoll in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. The artefacts include four large anchors, cannons and cannonballs. The Gledstanes is the fourth whaling vessel found in the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, evidence of the area's significance as a 19th-century whaling area.  The divers who found the shipwreck were taking part in the 2008 Maritime Heritage Expedition, sponsored by NOAA's National Marine Sanctuaries.  Full story...

Former BSAC vice chairman and regional coach of North Scotland, Ken Farrow, 62, died while diving off Orkney on June 2.  A professional scientist and chartered engineer, Ken worked in a number of volunteer roles within the BSAC both nationally and regionally including 12 years as the regional coach for North Scotland.

Indonesia Missing Komodo divers found

Five divers, who were swept away during a dive off Komodo, Indonesia have been found after managing to reach a remote beach on an island 25 miles away. 

Worried that their rescue might take days, the group began scavenging for shellfish to survive and were forced to throw stones to drive off a komodo dragon - one of the large, aggressive lizards native to the area that are capable of killing human beings.

Ship to be sunk in British Virgin Islands’ waters         

A 1930s vessel that sailed the Sir Francis Channel for more than ten years will be sunk as a artificial reef in Virgin Islands’ waters. The announcement by the BVI Scuba Association (BVISA) confirms Premier Ralph O’Neal’s permission to obtain the Windjammer S/V Flying Cloud and sink it for the enjoyment of Virgin Islands’ divers.

31 people licensed to cull lionfish 

Lionfish have decimated areas of the Caribbean and recently their numbers have been multiplying around Bermuda. A group of 31 volunteers has now been issued special licenses by the Ministry of the Environment and Sports to use scuba equipment to cull the invasive Lionfish which are threatening Bermuda's reef ecosystem and commercial fishing.

Pacific Bikini diving forced to close

After operating for 13-years, financial losses have forced closure of scuba diving at Bikini Atoll. 

The problems are due to the inability of the national carrier Air Marshall Islands to get passengers to and from Bikini in the past eight months when both its planes were crippled with mechanical problems, coupled with high fuel prices.

Australia Divers survive 19-hours in the water

Richard Neely, 38, from the UK, and partner Alison Dalton, 40, an American, drifted for 19 hours off Australia's Great Barrier Reef as rescuers failed to spot them. 

They tied themselves together as they drifted for nine miles after surfacing too far from the boat they had dived off.
