The Underwater Channel (www.theunderwaterchannel.tv) in association with PADI (www.PADI.com) are looking to light up diving in Australia for UWC’s viewers around the world!  To do so we have launched an international competition to find an experienced and knowledgeable Aussie diver with bags of confidence and charisma to join The Underwater Channel’s team of presenters (aka Faces!) around the world to become the Face of Australia.  After an initial pre-selection of 6 semi-finalists a series of TV programs will be broadcast on UWC with a UWC/PADI judging panel who will feature the videos and comment (in a friendly fashion) upon the applications!  The viewing public will then be invited to vote, first for the semi-finalists and finally for the winner!   The Face of Australia will be chosen by our viewers!more...  Full story...

August 25 2008 HawaiiArchaeologists have located British whaler sunk by bad weather in 1837 off Kure Atoll Artefacts from the remains of a wreck believed to be of the British whaling vessel Gledstanes lost for 171 years have been found off Kure Atoll in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. The artefacts include four large anchors, cannons and cannonballs. The Gledstanes is the fourth whaling vessel found in the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, evidence of the area's significance as a 19th-century whaling area.  The divers who found the shipwreck were taking part in the 2008 Maritime Heritage Expedition, sponsored by NOAA's National Marine Sanctuaries.  Full story...

February 18 2009 Cayman IslandsNew International scuba Diving Hall Of Fame Inductees The International Scuba Diving Hall of Fame (ISDHF) has recognized four international pioneers and two Cayman Island honorees for their contributions to the recreational scuba diving industry. In a ceremony held on Grand Cayman Island on January 29, 2009, awards for the Inductees and local Ministry of Tourism Honorees were presented by the Hon. Charles E. Clifford, JP, Minister for Tourism, Environment, Investment & Commerce in Cayman.  The Honorable Minister praised the newest Inductees as dedicated and professional individuals who have taken their love for diving and applied it through various disciplines to promote awareness of the aquatic environment, maintain the admirable safety record of diving, and establish a foundation for the worldwide development of the sport.  The evening’s Master of Ceremonies was Leslie Leaney, President of the Historical Diving Society in the US. Greenpeace says its ship Esperanza found evidence of illegal tuna fishing in international waters between Papua New Guinea and the Federated States of Micronesia last week. The vessels were Philippine-registered.

Taiwan Taiwanese divers found alive

Eight Taiwanese scuba divers have been rescued nearly 48 hours after going missing.  In an amazing feat of endurance, one of them managed to swim ashore and told rescuers where they could find the others. 

Five were lifted from the sea by helicopters at dawn Monday and the last two missing divers were found later.

An extensive search and rescue effort continues for eight scuba divers missing in waters off Kenting National Park since Saturday. 

Four helicopters from an airborne police unit, six coastguard patrol boats, twenty fishing boats and several tourist vessels scoured waters near Chihsingyen (Seven Star Rock), a popular diving spot.

US Florida is loggerhead turtle Nests Hit Record Low

According the latest report from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission in 2007 researchers found 45,084 nests for the loggerhead turtles, down more than 4,600 nests from the year before.

"Data collected during the 2007 season indicate the lowest nesting levels in Florida" in the history of the monitoring program concluded the report. In 1998, the state reported 85,988 nests.

Thailand Pufferfish Thai funeral dish poisons guests

More than 140 mourners at a funeral in northern Thailand are reported to have been taken ill after eating a dish that appears to have contained pufferfish.  

The mourners started vomiting and complained of numb tongues and shortness of breath and were rushed to hospital after being served soup containing fish balls bought at a local market in Nan province, the Bangkok Post reports.

South Africa Three die after great white shark-diving boat capsizes off South Africa

Two men from the United States and one from Norway died after the boat they were in capsized near Gansbaai on Sunday. Chairperson of the Great White Shark Protection Foundation, Mariette Hopley, said the shark-cage diving boat had just anchored when a freak wave capsized the vessel.  Ten people on board were clients of Great White Shark Projects. Another nine were crew and staff members.

Philippines Cargo of young whale sharks seized

A cargo of juvenile sharks, four of them allegedly whale sharks, were intercepted in Pagbilao town, Quezon province, by a task force of provincial fishery officials and environmentalists. 

Glenn Forbes, Tanggol Kalikasan-Southern Tagalog program officer, said that a concerned citizen and a local government official from the coastal town of Calauag, Quezon province tipped them off by mobile phone that several baby whale sharks would be transported to Manila.

New York NY aquarium loses Bertha

The New York Aquarium has lost a 43-year-old raggedtooth shark called Bertha Aquarium Director Jon Forrest Dohlin said Bertha “was a great animal and a symbol for the plight of all sharks in the wild.”  

The facility, which is run by the Wildlife Conservation Society, says Bertha may have been the longest living raggedtooth shark in an aquarium.
