Following up on the suspicion of British colleagues, Australian researchers have proved a link between salmonella and home aquariums by showing that the strains of drug-resistant salmonella found in patients and in their home aquariums were the same.
The researchers stress that sensible hygiene, including washing hands after touching the water or gravel and making sure the water did not splash onto surfaces where it could contaminate food , should be followed.
The strain of salmonella, known as Salmonella enterica serovar paratyphi B, commonly known as Salmonella Paratyphi B, is thought to have originated in Southeast Asia where antibiotics are widely used in fish aquaculture. |
