There were worries that cyclone Larry, which struck the Great Barrier Reef in March, would have
caused considerable damage to Queensland's greatest international tourism attraction but it is now thought to have damaged less than one percent of it. The Great Barrier Reef is more than 2,300km-long but the area severely hit by the cyclone is 20--30km-wide.
Cyclone Larry passed over the reef early on March 20th as a category four cyclone and intensified to category five before reaching land in the Innisfail area, south of Cairns. Some scientists’ believe that the cyclone may have had a positive effect on the Great Barrier Reef by cooling the ocean temperatures thus reducing the likelihood of coral bleaching.
