The artefacts include four large anchors, cannons and cannonballs. The Gledstanes is the fourth whaling vessel found in the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, evidence of the area's significance as a 19th-century whaling area.  The divers who found the shipwreck were taking part in the 2008 Maritime Heritage Expedition, sponsored by NOAA's National Marine Sanctuaries.  Full story...

Asia Pacific Premium Sponsors for Project AWARE International Cleanup Day 20 September 2008
Project AWARE is pleased to announce that Scubapro Uwatec and Aquaventure Whitetip Dive Supply (AWDS) are this year’s proud sponsors for International Cleanup Day, 20 September 2008.

“Scubapro have long recognised the efforts of divers and volunteers on International Cleanup Day.  We are happy be part of this unique cleanup effort and in doing so to make a positive contribution to the marine environment,” said Steve Wannell Scubapro Australia General Manager.

Scubapro produces the funky mesh cleanup bag offered in Project AWARE’s fundraising cleanup challenge. It’s a handy way to keep oceans clean all year round. Aquaventure Whitetip Dive Supply (AWDS) is the Philippines leading dive supply specialist and offers a 25% discount to cleanup volunteers with Project AWARE’s Certificate of Recognition.

“AWDS supports Project AWAREs mission to conserve underwater environments through education, advocacy and action and we encourage all our customers to volunteer for a cleanup event,” added Brian Giles Managing Director Aquaventure Whitetip Dive Supply.

Project AWARE are delighted to have sponsors on board for International Cleanup Day. The dedication of Scubapro Uwatec and Aquaventure Whitetip Dive Supply to this event shows that the dive industry is keen to support conservation efforts.   Their generous donations will support cleanups across Asia Pacific, and we challenge everyone to make 2008 the biggest cleanup yet,” said Mike Holme, Associate Director Project AWARE.

Did you know that every year an estimated seven billion tons of debris enter the world’s oceans? Nearly 90 percent of all marine debris is plastic. Plastics do not biodegrade, they remain for centuries. The consequences are devastating as nearly one million birds are killed by aquatic litter and an estimated 100,000 marine animals including dolphins, whales and sea turtles choke or get tangled in debris every year.

Get Involved Today: Project AWARE is calling on all divers, snorkelers and water enthusiasts to get involved in International Cleanup Day on 20 September 2008 by organizing a cleanup event, volunteering, fundraising or making a donation.

Go to www.projectaware.org to make a difference. Find the nearest cleanup event to volunteer at or organize your own event.
