Another virgin shark birth A Hungarian aquarium is celebrating a virgin shark birth after its lone female whitetip reef shark produced a pup without having ever come into contact with a male shark.
The shark has been on her own at the Nyiregyhaza Centre since she was born seven years ago.Parthenogenesis, where an egg starts to divide without being fertilised, occurs in a number of lower animals. The management are planning to build the shark a bigger tank, find her a male and then hopefully next time round she can have a baby properly. Chris Brown from Weymouth Sea Life Centre said the birth suggested that parthenogenesis was more common than previously thought. |
