X-LED in Thailand Vol 4 No 1
The X-LED torch from Seac Sub is now available in Thailand from your local dealer and supplied by Dive Supply. This new torch combines high and long-lasting performance, light quality and reliability to meet the needs of all divers.
The advantage of the LED bulb system lies in high quality luminosity which is equal to 40w and a battery life 4 times that of torches with halogen bulbs. The torch lasts 16-hours on 1 set of batteries with 3-hours at maximum power and then a gradual fading away of the light which gives it the flexibility to be used in any scuba or snorkel situation. The 1.5V Alkaline batteries which power the torch are readily available, which means no time out of the water is lost waiting for the torch to recharge. The X-LED weighs in at 850 grams including the batteries and only 370 grams when it is in the water. The body of the torch is made from anodized aluminium alloy and is 22cm in length and 6.5cm in diameter and is rated to 200m. The X-LED has a 12 degree beam with optical lenses and produces a characteristic light, which allows a realistic perception of colour while diving and gives the user a heightened experience of the underwater world by night. Suunto D6 dive computer and compass
Suunto dive computers give all divers, from beginners to advanced underwater explorers, the freedom to enjoy their underwater surroundings by providing them with the information they need to maximize their safety. Made from stainless steel, the new Suunto D6 dive computer has been designed to be both a stylish watch on land and a trusted companion underwater. Suunto’s unique digital compass is also found in the Suunto D6 and shows divers the direction in which they are heading both graphically and numerically.
The Suunto D6 has three modes; Air, Nitrox, and Gauge. Divers can choose between making traditional shallow safety stops or, with the deep stops function activated, making safety stops at depth. The log book memory and graphical dive profile give real time water temperature, which can be seen on the wristop computer’s display. The Suunto D6 can store over 100 hours of profile memory. The dive history shows the total number of dives and how many hours of dives the computer has logged. The dive planner enables repetitive dive planning. Watch functions include stopwatch, dual time, alarm clock and the use of the compass. After the dive, the dive profile can be downloaded to a PC for further analysis with the help of Suunto Dive Manager 2 software. In Nitrox mode, divers have the choice of using two different gas mixes, which are preset before the dive. Choose from 21-100% oxygen content, with the ability to change the partial pressure of oxygen for each mix. During the dive, if you are within the allowable safety factor (maximum operating depth), you can switch to the second gas. Gauge mode can be used either for freediving or technical diving. With freediving, the sampling rate for the log book can be set to one second intervals. When diving in this mode, there is a dual display of dive time and a stopwatch which can be reset.
Award for Waterproof
At BOOT in Düsseldorf, Germany (the largest dive trade show in Europe) it was announced at the Tauchen magazine annual award presentation that Waterproof Diving International AB had won 1st price for wet suits and semi-dry suits and 3rd place for dry-suits. Waterproof is a Swedish company that has made wet suits since the 1980’s. A few years ago it came out with the outstanding Zubzor and Minizor wet suits, both 3mm, and Aquazor in 5 and 7mm. In 2005 Waterproof took another huge step and launched the APP (Advanced Performance Program) style on both suits and accessories. Suits like Lynx 5mm, Aries 7mm and Libra 5mm were the first suits to feature gender-specific styling that provides comfortable lift and support, a 10mm thick spine pad for comfort and limited water flow, anatomically sculpted pre-bent arms and legs and the comfort zipper to relieve stress on the surface, just to mention a few. This was followed by the hooded Hydra 3/5mm and Canis 2mm vest with hood. The Hydra hood features the Hood Air Vent System (HAVS), a one-way valve to bleed the air out of the hood without allowing water to enter. Canis suits have the same feature. Crux gloves are another outstanding product in the APP line. Waterproof Diving International AB have assigned Asia Divers in the Philippines to be their distributor in Asia (excluded are China, Japan and Korea) including Australia and New Zealand. Asia Divers are now looking for serious dealers throughout the region to be representative for their own area. Hand-held Sonar Device
An improved waterproof hand-held sonar device has been developed to help divers’ locate objects in poor visibility by engineers at the University of Washington’s Applied Physics Laboratory. Together with improved resolution it has a tracking system so that the diver can to follow a search grid or deviate from the grid and then easily return to it to resume the search pattern. The device has a display system and tracking system developed by Coastal Systems Station of Panama City, Florida. Images are updated nine times per second and together with information from the tracking system are viewed on a video display screen attached over a side of the diver’s mask. Weighing 15.4kg (34 pounds) in air including 3.2kg (7 pounds) of NiCad batteries it is 46cm (18 inches)-long, 30cm (12 inches)-wide and 30cm (12 inches)-deep and neutrally buoyant in water. Fully charged batteries will operate the device for four hours.
 Shocking Shark Suit
It is well known that dangerous sharks have electroreceptors called Ampullae de Lorenzini in their snouts that are used to sense prey and if the electric field is too strong they back off. Several devices have been designed to make use of this fact including the commercially available Shark Shield but they all require batteries, which have limited operating time. Now Vladimir Vlad in the US has applied for a patent on a wet suit with piezoelectric ceramic fibres woven into its fabric. The fibres extend along the body and limbs, connecting to metal electrodes which collect any charge generated when the piezoelectric material is deformed by the wearer’s movement such as when swimming. During normal swimming, the suit will continually generate several volts but if the diver sees a shark and swims faster to avoid it the suit generates higher voltages and stronger fields. If the shark ignores the electric field and bites the suit, it gets a shock in the mouth, which hopefully deters it.
