Korea - US Navy divers are searching a section of ocean floor about 25 miles off South Korea’s
west coast in a bid to recover an F-16 fighter jet that crashed there on March 14 while on a routine training mission. The pilot, Capt. Donald Siegmund, of the 8th Fighter wing’s 35th Fighter Squadron, ejected safely and was picked up by a South Korean military rescue helicopter.
The American Air Force wants to recover the wreckage to investigate the cause of the crash. Parts of the aircraft were located using sonar by the minesweeper USS Guardian in roughly 60ft of water on March 24 but visibility, winds and currents are proving difficult for those trying to recover them on the salvage vessel USS Safeguard. |
