Spotted eagle ray kills woman A Michigan woman was killed off the Florida Keys after being struck by a spotted eagle ray that had jumped out of the water. Judy Kay Zagoski was riding in a boat travelling at some 25 miles per hour when she was struck in the face by the ray.
The 57-year-old woman's 88-year-old father, Virgil Bouck, was driving the 25-foot boat through Vaca Cut toward the open Atlantic Ocean when the collision knocked Zagorski backward onto the floor of the boat, fracturing her skull in several places and causing brain injuries. Monroe County's medical examiner determined that the cause of death was “blunt force'' head trauma, and that the collision with the ray killed her. Spotted eagle rays do not attack humans but are known to leap out of the water to escape predators, give birth or shake off parasites. |
