August 25 2008 HawaiiArchaeologists have located British whaler sunk by bad weather in 1837 off Kure Atoll Artefacts from the remains of a wreck believed to be of the British whaling vessel Gledstanes lost for 171 years have been found off Kure Atoll in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. The artefacts include four large anchors, cannons and cannonballs. The Gledstanes is the fourth whaling vessel found in the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, evidence of the area's significance as a 19th-century whaling area.  The divers who found the shipwreck were taking part in the 2008 Maritime Heritage Expedition, sponsored by NOAA's National Marine Sanctuaries.  Full story...

November 26 2008 AustraliaDivers support breast cancer dayWhen one of the members of Pro Dive Nelson Bay’s Narki Gnome Dive Club was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, the group wanted to support her and raise awareness for the Breast Cancer Network of Australia (BCNA).   Diving was what brought them together, so they held an event with their own underwater twist. For the past eight years Mini-Fields of Women have been held in communities across Australia during October as part of Australia's breast cancer month, an initiative from The Breast Cancer Network of Australia (BCNA). The Mini-Fields of Women campaign places hundreds of hot pink lady silhouettes in prominent positions throughout Australia to represent women affected by breast cancer.  Full story...

August 10 2008 UK Bogus bends nets Divers £250,000  A pair of divers swindled £250,000 (US$500,000) from the National Health Service for treating bogus cases of the bends.  David Welsh, 49, and diving instructor Michael Brass, 43, are facing prison sentences after being found guilty of conspiracy to defraud the NHS and perverting the course of justice. Welsh ran the Fort Bovisand diving centre, which had its own recompression chamber.  They paid strangers they met in pubs up to £200 to pose as divers who needed recompression treatment, they only needed only the real names, addresses, dates of birth and national insurance numbers of the supposed victims to work the fraud. Most had never been underwater and some could barely swim.  Welsh billed National Health Trusts from all over the UK £6,500 a time for treating the 37 fake victims.  The fraud was discovered when police investigated two cases of divers from Liverpool who were supposedly treated for the bends at the recompression chamber.    Full story...

UK New Red Sea Zone for Dive 2008
ImageA brand new area promoting dive centres in the Egyptian Red Sea will be making its debut at this year’s Dive Show at the NEC in Birmingham, UK, on 1 and 2 November.

The Red Sea Zone is the brainchild of the Chamber of Diving and Watersports (CDWS), a dedicated body under the umbrella of the Egyptian Tourist Federation committed to all diving and watersport activities which take place throughout Egypt.  Part of the Chamber’s remit is to promote diving and watersport activities in Egypt’s coastal waters through a mix of advertising, promotional activities and live events.  Dive 2008 has been selected for the official launch of the initiative and will see ten of the Red Sea’s leading dive centres exhibiting within the new Red Sea Zone.  These include HEPCA, Camel Dive Club, Orca Dive Clubs, Nesima Resort and Sharks Bay, Sinai Divers, Red Sea Explorers, Barakuda Diving, Royal Evolution and Aquarius.

Commenting on the new initiative, Hesham Gabr of CDWS said:  “This is the first time that an initiative such as this has been undertaken by the Egyptian Tourist Board and we are delighted that so many Red Sea dive operators will be participating.

“We chose Dive 2008 to be our first official showing as it is widely recognised as the UK’s biggest and most important diving event.  It attracts more divers than any other exhibition and we are confident that the new Red Sea Zone will be one of the show’s highlights in 2008.”

In another first for Dive 2008, the British Isles Experience area, which was so well received at this year’s LIDS, will be repeated at the show.  The area will be a celebration of UK diving and will house dive charter companies and dive centres, together with training and conservation organisations.  It will have its own distinctive look, will be highly visible from afar and will also feature a British themed refreshment area.

Dive 2008 has also teamed up with Suunto to offer the first sixteen companies that book into the British Isles Experience the state-of-the-art Suunto D6 computer and bracelet, which is worth £570.   For more information about exhibiting within this area contact Sharon Platt on 0208 943 2488 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Over 250 companies have already booked stands at Dive 2008, and the line-up of speakers for the free presentation theatres is looking like a who’s who of the diving elite.  Visit www.diveshows.co.uk for more information.
