My first glimpse of Koh Tao was through sleepy eyes at the unbelievable hour of 6am. I had come from Chumphon on the only means of transportation from the mainland then - the infamous 'coconut boat'. It was a night boat, in the sense that it ran at night, but had no facilities for sleeping -you simply found yourself some sacking left over from transporting coconuts and curled up.

Looking at the map of Thailand, we find the country has three coastal borders. This benefits the country commercially, not only in terms of transportation, but also through the abundant sustainable resources of food, minerals and energy all produced here. Therefore, we all should appreciate and use the marine resources wisely.

There is no doubt that stories about octopi can set the imagination racing. Roger Klocek, in an article in Aquaticus, the journal of the Shedd Aquarium, Chicago, calls them the most interesting animals alive. He pulled together some astonishing facts. For instance, there is good evidence that an octopus with an arm span of more than 50 metres did exist, up to a few centuries ago anyway. These days the biggest is the giant Pacific octopus, a cool-water species, that reaches 10 metres in arm span, quite large enough if you encounter one during a dive!

I have logged almost ever dive possible or could imagine (cold water, shipwrecks, caves, coral). I have logged many dives below recreational depth limits and dives with different mixes of gas other then air. However, when I started diving with a rebreather, I quickly realized that I was hopping into the water with the beginners.People would ask me to do this dive or that dive with them but I knew that shallow beach diving should be my only dives for a while.

Most divers pass-over the opportunity to dive off the beach on Chaweng Reef in Koh Samui in favor of the clear waters of Koh Tao and Sail Rock. They don't believe that there could possibly be anything worth seeing in this unlikely location.

Strangely, Chaweng Reef is one of my favorite places to dive. The obvious detractions are actually part of what makes me like it.
Chaweng Reef has a maximum depth of 6-8m (18-25 ft), some would say that this depth could be snorkelled and it's hardly worth using a tank. I love this shallow depth because I can stay down as long as my air lasts, and take my time! It's a no-rush no-stress dive and the lower visibility forces me to go slower and really look at things. Every time I dive here I find something new.
