Thailand's wildlife is under serious threat from illegal hunting and trade for consumption. Many plant and animal species found in Southeast Asia are still used in traditional Asian medicines or as exotic pets and food items. Demand for these items is high, and as a result illegal trade is rife. In April 2003, conservation organization, WildAid Foundation (Thailand) launched a nationwide campaign to raise pubic awareness of the plight of nine critically endangered species.

The perfect dive is a state of mind
I once had a diver sign-up for a dip when the conditions were less than ideal. It was a cloudy, rainy day and there were small waves breaking on the beach. I had warned the diver that it wasn't really worth going but he insisted. As we waded out through the waves I noticed that I couldn't actually see my feet and hoped it would be clearer beyond the surf.

‘Things to Look Out For’

Humans
By far the most dangerous creature in the ocean is a mammal varying in length from 1.5 to 2.0 metres commonly called a human. The male of the species is particularly fearsome when steering a roaring speedboat or a shrieking, "Hang Yao", through a swimmer infested sea. You'll hear the approaching boat long before even a wide-awake boatman can see you. Get your arms in the air, wave and make sure he's seen you before you return to your placid snorkelling.

No less than 45 diving companies from Phuket, Khao Lak, Phi Phi, Koh Lanta and Krabi once again, joined forces to offer their complimentary services in training up Thai Nationals to the first level of professional diver certification: the Divemaster.

The idea behind this now annual project is to provide the community, and not just on Phuket, with opportunity's to become an active, responsible and professional member of the diving community.

Environment

If you had asked me eight or nine years ago to venture inside a submerged cavern or shipwreck I would have thought you where crazy. However, nowadays you'd get a completely answer: "Where and when do we leave?" After logging a lot of dives and taking plenty of courses I now feel comfortable entering these types of environment. Having said that, this style of diving is not for your average recreational diver. The dives take a lot of preparation and planning in order to ensure personal safety.

Emergency First Response CPR and First Aid Programs are now available to PADI Instructors through their local PADI Course Directors and Emergency First Response Instructor Courses.

On a visit to DEMA in October 2002, where the program was first released, PADI Course Director, Chris Owen attended a PADI Course Director Update which included the first Emergency First Response Instructor Trainer Course.
