Thailand's
wildlife is under serious threat from illegal hunting and trade
for consumption. Many plant and animal species found in Southeast
Asia are still used in traditional Asian medicines or as exotic
pets and food items. Demand for these items is high, and as
a result illegal trade is rife. In April 2003, conservation
organization, WildAid Foundation (Thailand) launched a nationwide
campaign to raise pubic awareness of the plight of nine critically
endangered species.

The

I
once had a diver sign-up for a dip when the conditions were less
than ideal. It was a cloudy, rainy day and there were small waves
breaking on the beach. I had warned the diver that it wasn't really
worth going but he insisted. As we waded out through the waves
I noticed that I couldn't actually see my feet and hoped it would
be clearer beyond the surf.

Lesson No 2
‘Things to Look Out For’
Humans
By far the most dangerous creature in the ocean is a mammal varying
in length from 1.5 to 2.0 metres commonly called a human. The
male of the species is particularly fearsome when steering a roaring
speedboat or a shrieking, "Hang Yao", through a swimmer
infested sea. You'll hear the approaching boat long before even
a wide-awake boatman can see you. Get your arms in the air, wave
and make sure he's seen you before you return to your placid snorkelling.

Diving
in an
Overhead
Environment

If
you had asked me eight or nine years ago to venture inside a submerged
cavern or shipwreck I would have thought you where crazy. However,
nowadays you'd get a completely answer: "Where and when do
we leave?" After logging a lot of dives and taking plenty of
courses I now feel comfortable entering these types of environment.
Having said that, this style of diving is not for your average recreational
diver. The dives take a lot of preparation and planning in order
to ensure personal safety.
