Annual
International Clean Up Day Gets Bigger And Bigger
The
weekend of the 15th &16th September
saw more than three quarters of a million people descend on
beaches all over the world to help tackle the problem of marine
debris during the 16th Annual International Coastal
Cleanup.
Organised by The Ocean Conservancy and supported by PADI’s
Project AWARE, PADI Members worldwide were out in force to
make the shores and oceans a cleaner place to visit.
In the Asia Pacific region alone, Coordinators from
190 PADI Dive Stores organised more than 10,300 volunteers
from countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Korea,
Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Taiwan, Fiji, Hong Kong,
Singapore and French Polynesia to take part in the event.
This equated to a 46% increase in the number of dive centers
participating and a huge 72% increase in volunteers, compared
to last year’s clean up in the region.
While marine
debris can be found in all of the world’s oceans, the problem
does not necessarily start there. Close to 80% of the debris
found on beaches is washed, blown or dumped from shore. Rubbish
continues to be dumped into streams and rivers that flow to
the sea from countless inland sources.
