August 25 2008 HawaiiArchaeologists have located British whaler sunk by bad weather in 1837 off Kure Atoll Artefacts from the remains of a wreck believed to be of the British whaling vessel Gledstanes lost for 171 years have been found off Kure Atoll in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. The artefacts include four large anchors, cannons and cannonballs. The Gledstanes is the fourth whaling vessel found in the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, evidence of the area's significance as a 19th-century whaling area.  The divers who found the shipwreck were taking part in the 2008 Maritime Heritage Expedition, sponsored by NOAA's National Marine Sanctuaries.  Full story...

August 10 2008 UK Bogus bends nets Divers £250,000  A pair of divers swindled £250,000 (US$500,000) from the National Health Service for treating bogus cases of the bends.  David Welsh, 49, and diving instructor Michael Brass, 43, are facing prison sentences after being found guilty of conspiracy to defraud the NHS and perverting the course of justice. Welsh ran the Fort Bovisand diving centre, which had its own recompression chamber.  They paid strangers they met in pubs up to £200 to pose as divers who needed recompression treatment, they only needed only the real names, addresses, dates of birth and national insurance numbers of the supposed victims to work the fraud. Most had never been underwater and some could barely swim.  Welsh billed National Health Trusts from all over the UK £6,500 a time for treating the 37 fake victims.  The fraud was discovered when police investigated two cases of divers from Liverpool who were supposedly treated for the bends at the recompression chamber.    Full story...

Vietnam: Rainbow Divers scores 100 National Geographic Diver Certifications
PADI, The Professional Association of Diving Instructors, congratulate Rainbow Divers on certifying their 100th PADI National Geographic Diver student in 2005 14 young ladies from the Danish Education Centre currently studying in Vietnam, completed the course with the Rainbow Divers Team. The National Geographic Diver course was run over 6 days to accommodate the students busy study schedule and allow them the time to develop the necessary open water skills.
PADI Course Director Jeremy Stein says “It’s always fun to teach these size groups and running the course over an extended period made it easier for the students and the instructors”.
All students elected to take the National Geographic Diver Course. ”It’s value for money whilst providing the best possible diving program and we get the cool binders”, said one student.
The students all received their certifications at a post course party held at Crazy Kims Bar in Nha Trang.
There are two ways that individuals can become National Geographic Divers. At Rainbow Divers, the only PADI National Geographic Dive Centre in Vietnam. People who do not already have a diver certification may enrol in the program which covers all the skills from the PADI Open Water Course and adds additional skills and adventures for the National Geographic Diver certification. You will learn to explore with detail, identify important underwater features and navigate with certainty. You will have the diving knowledge and practice to manoeuvre with poise along the reef’s ecosystems. With a minimum of five dives, divers achieving the National Geographic Diver Open Water certification may credit their experience toward the PADI Adventures in Diving program and the new PADI National Geographic Specialty Course.

Now A Specialty!!
The New PADI National Geographic Specialty Course
Divers who already hold a diver certification may complete a minimum of 2 dives for the PADI National Geographic Specialty Diver program. During this program divers will gain additional skills and knowledge by studying with National Geographic materials under the direct supervision of their Instructor. The PADI National Geographic Specialty Diver certification consists of a knowledge review based on information from the National Geographic Diver Almanac and DVD. In addition, you’ll fine-tune your buoyancy, navigation, exploration, and observation skills while on an open water dive. With the increase in knowledge and awareness you can also credit this Specialty towards the PADI Master Scuba Diver rating.
Jeremy Stein started Rainbow Divers in the mid 90’s and is responsible for opening the first PADI Dive Centre in Vietnam. Today Rainbow Divers have 6 locations throughout the country and are certainly synonymous with professional training and diving standards.
Offering PADI Dive courses from Discover Scuba Diving through to Instructor level, Rainbow Divers are also a Project AWARE Go ECO Operator.
Congratulations to Jeremy and his International dive team who continue to pioneer diving in Vietnam!
